What future forces will affect a leaders ability to lead in the next year, 5 years, 10 years?

Leaders Make the Future Ten New Leadership Skills for an Uncertain World (Audible Audio Edition) Bob Johansen Brett Barry Audible Studios Books

So many leadership books are affirming and validating, without being enlightening. I found Leaders Make the Future to be a thought-provoking book, with concepts that challenged me as a leader and as a coach. One example in the chapter on Constructive Depolarizing: "Clarity is critical for leaders, ...but certainty is downright dangerous. In a VUCA World, many will be attracted to “absolute shalls” and leaders will have to engage with these polarized and polarizing advocates who drive wedges between others." Recognizing that the most complex issues facing us require multiple perspectives enables us to listen to all the different voices in the room, and make use of the diversity we often strive for our our teams. Well done, Bob Johansen!

Leaders Make the Future Ten New Leadership Skills for an Uncertain World (Audible Audio Edition) Bob Johansen Brett Barry Audible Studios Books Reviews

Fascinating look at leadership skills likely necessary to navigate organizations through increasingly uncertain worlds.

Empowering with actions leaders can take and skills that we can develop to act in order to create the futures we want.

Compelling in the responsibility leaders will share in creating better tomorrows in the face of serious shortages in many resources.

Hopeful in expressing means by which to overcome challenges and leverage our collective intelligence to make a better world without being able to solve every problem.

As an engineer at heart, leaves me uplifted that we can act sensibly without knowing the solution in advance.

Thoroughly enjoyable reading written in a highly accessible style.

Highly suggested reading to aid the leadership roles we each take on.
This is one of the best books I've read for understanding and planning the future incorporating global trends. It gave me a much greater understanding of organizing forces and principles I recognize but had not put into the larger context. Buy the hardcover book for the marvelous graphics inside the cover.

I was recommended this book by Marina Gorbis, current Executive Director of the Institute for the Future this past week, and along with her book, The Nature of the Future, they tell a compelling story of how leadership is changing in this rapidly changing and complex world. I really liked the reference to the 'maker' culture and how leaders are 'makers' of organizations. The ten skills proposed are thought-provoking and not your typical set. I recommend this to all leaders and 'want to be' leaders.
I heard Johansen summarize his book at a CORO leadership fund-raising and recognition lunch in San Francisco and was instantly sold, at age 74! He opened my eyes into what I need to be thinking about for a small non-profit whose Board I lead, so much so that I bought copies for not only our Executive Director, but also for four international interns we have with us for six months, and even my grandson, a freshman at the University of Louisville.
This will be listed as one of my life altering books, which is a very short selective list. I have read it twice. I recommend it regularly in my to my audiences as a must read for anyone leading a major organization or large company. I love to learn from the books I read, and this was an incredible learning experience. Highly recommended, engaging and enlightening!
The book is thought provoking but reads more like an introductory talk. It would have been great to have more more depth. For example, more prescriptive advice on how to approach dilemmas. I am also skeptical that the world is more "VUCA" now than ever. The present always seems messy. For those what want true "VUCA", I recommend Barbara Tuchman's book A Distant Mirror.
Having heard Bob Johansen deliver a keynote at the ACMP conference (Association of Change Management Professionals)this April, I was interested in reading his book and I'm glad I did. I made a point to order the second edition because of his updates and collaboration with the Center for Creative Leadership. He promised to be provocative and he is. Even better, he practices what he preaches in writing clearly and persuasively about the 10 new leadership skills that he sees as add-ons to current leadership competency models (Gulp! He also supports the concept of doing more.) He also gives broad guidance on what to do to prepare for the future, but leaves it in the readers' hands to figure out what to do--which is another of his lessons. The book is a little repetitive in places; however, he's reinforcing messages that seem difficult for some to accept.
